WAISA Council is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Kallam McDougall. Kallum has been a familiar face at our competitions for years now taking photographs of our athletes as they compete.
Kallam provided our athletes with a permanent and beautiful reminder of their performances and achievements. Our heartfelt condolences go to his family, Mercedes, Lia and Erin Rose.
The inaugural Ice Skating Union Oceania Novice International Figure Skating Competition will be taking place at the O’Brien Arena, Melbourne from May 16th to 18th.
Two WAISA athletes will be representing Australia at the competition. Monique Hashem will be competing in the Basic Novice A event and Nerin Cornwell will be competing in the Basic Novice B event.
The Basic Novice A event is scheduled to commence at 1.15pm, Wednesday 16th May and the Basic Novice B event is scheduled to commence at 12noon on Thursday, 17th May. The entire competition is to be live streamed.

WAISA Council is delighted to announce it has been approached for a fifth year to provide a pre-show for the forthcoming Disney on Ice – 100 Years of Magic!
Mr Sean Abram will again choreograph the pre-show following the success of the pre-shows since 2014 (with the promoter declaring 2017 the best ever!!).
The Challenge Cup is an annual International Figure Skating competition generally held in February or March in The Hague, Netherlands.
The Netherlands is a small country in the western part of Europe with a population of more than 17million people.
Lia Web McDougall will be competing in the Challenge Cup on Thursday 22nd of Feb for the short and 23rd of Feb for the Free. We wish Lia the best of luck in her first international competition
In Olympic News, how proud we are of all the Australian competitors at the 2018 Winter Olympics. Pair Skaters, Ekaterina Alexandrovskaya and Harley Windsor just missed the qualification for the Free but had an amazing skate with strong competition.
Brendan Kerry qualified for the long placing 16th in the short and put out a great skate.
WAISA would like to thank all of the athletes who participated in the competition for providing a very entertaining and enjoyable evening.
The overall Les Latham Memorial Artistic Trophy went to Giselle Smith and the overall Simon Waller Memorial Team Trophy went to The Boogie Girls, Mizuho Bookman, Anne Bolton and Karen Cunningham.

Congratulations to our athletes who competed at the 2018 ANZAS International Adult Competition in Melbourne. The event was hosted by Victoria at the Obrien Group Arena.
Taking place over two days, the event ran from Saturday 10th – Sunday 11th of February.
There was a good turn out of athletes with competitors from a variety of countries including USA, NZ, Sweden & Germany taking part. All disciplines were represented with skaters competing in Singles, Pairs, Ice Dance and Artistic.

2017 was a challenging year for WAISA Council in many ways. However, Council was inspired by the consistent dedication and hard work from all of the athletes.
Council managed to overcome many of the challenges and produce another outstanding year for the Association.
The Western Australian Ice Skating Association is proud to announce that we are 100% behind the Department of Sport and Recreation’s “True Sport” program.
We are so excited by the program and it’s values that we have agreed to name our 2018 competitions after the program.
The first competition of the season is the 2018 True Sport Les Latham Memorial Artistic Competition and the True Sport Simon Waller Memorial Team Trophy which take place at Cockburn Ice Arena on Sunday 18th February with events commencing at 6.30pm.
WAISA Council believes in the values of True Sport and will support our clubs and members to share these values both on and off the ice rink.

Congratulations to all our skaters who participated at the Australian 2017 National Championships. All our skaters performed great programs with some strong competition. Here are some of the highlights.

Basic Novice, Bees synchro team made it to the podium coming 1st place. Infusion Junior placing 3rd. Excellent result. WA had six teams
Our adult competitors skated strong with almost all competitors returning home with a medal. Well done girls.
The Novice divisions were extremely competitive with 39 competitors in Novice A, six from WA.
We were happy to celebrate our wonderful achievements of our members during 2017 at this year’s State Banquet held on November 4th. During the evening, we celebrated the hard work and commitment of our Volunteers, Administrators, Technical Officials and of course our Athletes.
This year marked the 40th anniversary of the foundation of the Western Australian Ice Skating Association formed at the home of Mary-Ellen and Dough Mather in March 1977.
As we are all aware, Mary-Ellen passed away late last year and was the heart and soul of the Association. It has been a very difficult year without her. Dough has continued this year as treasurer but unfortunately did not attend this year’s banquet. Mary-Ellen’s legacy is a strong and thriving Association that will continue to bring the sport that she so loved to Western Australia for many years to come.
2017 outstanding achievements
Our Senior Synchronised team, Infusion Senior, won the title of Australian Champions at the 2016 National Championships and so earned themselves the right to compete as Team Australia at the World Synchronised Skating Championships in Colorado Springs.
It is with great sadness that WAISA reports the passing of Mary-Ellen Mather. Mary-Ellen has been such an integral part of so many of our lives and has given so much to our skating family.
She taught us the love and passion for the sport she loved so much. Mary-Ellen watched so many generations of skaters emerge and blossom and had such an influence on so many athletes even if some may not have known it at the time. It will not be the same without her around... and there will forever be such a huge hole left in the WA Ice Skating family where Mary-Ellen always sat.
Her legacy is in all the athletes past and present that she fostered and supported who have helped form what we now know as WA Ice Skating

Her love for all things skating and her commitment to skating in WA in particular will always be remembered and respected. She was the large and ever beating heart of our skating world and she will never be forgotten in our hearts and minds.
